833,800. Resin-impregnated asbestos sheets; laminates. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd June 26, 1957 [Sept. 5, 1956], No. 20204/57. Class 140. [Also in Group XXVIII] A reinforced organosiloxane sheet structure contains one or more reinforcing sheets, at least 50% of which are asbestos felts containing at least 99% by weight of mechanically-opened chrysotile fibres of " Canadian No. 1 crude " grade having a staple length of at least ¥ inch and a total iron content of less than 2% by weight, any other reinforcing sheets present being composed of woven glass cloth substantially free from organic matter, e.g. " heatcleaned " glass cloth, all the reinforcing sheets in said structure being impregnated and bonded together with an organosiloxane copolymeric resin consisting essentially of 4.5 to 17 mol. per cent diphenylsiloxane units, 22 to 55 mol. per cent monophenylsiloxane units and 40 to 65 mol. per cent of monomethylsiloxane units. The reinforcement may comprise a single sheet of the asbestos felt, a plurality of sheets all of the asbestos felt, alternate sheets of the asbestos felt and the glass cloth or an arrangement in which all the sheets on one side are of the asbestos felt and all the sheets on the other are of the glass cloth. The laminate may be made by (1) impregnating the asbestos felt, which may be supported on a glass carrier cloth, with an organic solvent solution of the resin of a concentration sufficient to deposit on said felt from 40 to 65% by weight of resin solids (dry felt = 100%), said solution containing also from 0.05 to 0.5% by weight of a quaternary ammonium salt curing catalyst for the resin (resin solids = 100%); (2) precuring the impregnated felt to an extent that it is tack-free at room temperature but thermoplastic at 150‹ to 200‹ C.; (3) assembling multiple plies of the felt so impregnated and pre-cured; (4) subjecting the assembly to heat and pressure ; and (5) after-curing the laminate at gradually increasing temperatures. The structures may be prepared in simple, irregular or tubular forms and may be used as, e.g. air ducts, instrument panel boards, insulators, airfoil sections and skins of sandwich constructions having foamed resin cores. Laminates in which all the reinforcing sheets are of heat-cleaned glass cloth are described for purposes of comparison. Specification 762,978 is referred to.
