Abstract
726,567. Laminated sheet materials. DOW CORNING, Ltd. March 4, 1953 [March 20, 1952], No. 6024/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. A laminated sheet material comprises alternate layers of particulated mica having an average particle size of at least 1 mil., and glass cloth, the two outer layers being glass cloth, the layers being bonded and impregnated with an organopolysiloxane resin having 1 to 1.6 organic radicals per silicon atom and in which resin the polymer units have the general formula R n SiO 4-n , where n is 1 or 2 and R is 2 methyl or phenyl. Suitable resins specified include combinations of the following siloxane units: C 6 H 5 SiO 1À5 , CH 3 SiO 1À5 , (CH 3 ) 2 SiO, (C 6 H 5 )CH 3 SiO, and (C 6 H 5 ) 2 SiO, together with SiO 2 units and R 2 SiO 0À5 units (R being methyl or phenyl). Preferably at least 50 per cent of the total organic radicals are methyl. Wet- and dry-ground micas as used in commerce, and mica obtained by splitting scrap mica with a hydraulic jet beneath the surface of a watermethanol solution may be used. The mica may be sheeted in known manner, e.g. on a nylon or glass cloth backing, stripping off the backing and impregnating with a siloxane resin. The glass cloth used in the laminate may be separately impregnated, the layers then assembled and heated in a press at temperatures up to 175 C. Curing at 250 C. may follow if necessary. The laminates so produced have a dielectric strength of greater than 300 volts per mil. after being heated at 250 C. for 250 hours. Catalysts such as the carboxylic acid salts of potassium, sodium, zinc, lead, cobalt and tin in amounts less than 1 per cent by weight of the siloxane resin may be employed to hasten the curing. In an example, mica sheets 4 to 6 mils. thick are prepared by deposition from a water slurry on to glass cloth. After removal from the cloth the sheets are impregnated with a 3 per cent toluene solution of a siloxane resin A containing dimethylsiloxane, monophenyl siloxane and monomethylsiloxane groups with potassium acetate as catalyst. After drying and curing the sheets are further impregnated with a 25 per cent toluene solution of a siloxane resin B containing phenylmethylsiloxane, dimethylsiloxane, monophenylsiloxane and monomethylsiloxane groups (catalysed by potassium acetate) dried and cured. Glass cloth is impregnated with a 60 per cent toluene solution of resin A catalysed by 0.22 per cent of lead 2-ethylhexoate and 0.7 per cent of dibutyl tin diacetate, and cured. Seven layers of impregnated glass cloth and six of impregnated mica sheet are laminated, moulded at 1750 C. and cured. Specification 726,563 is referred to.
