Abstract

A siloxane-in-water emulsion, for providing elastomeric coatings on paper, comprises from 0.1 to 10 per cent by weight of a mixture of siloxanes consisting of from 0.1 to less than 5.0 per cent by weight of a methylhydrogenpolysiloxane and from more than 95 to 99.9 per cent by weight of a hydroxylated siloxane having a viscosity of at least 100 cps. at 25 DEG C. and having the general formula <FORM:0804198/IV (a)/1> in which x has a value from 1.9 to 2 inclusive and in which substantially all the molecules have at least 2 Si-bonded OH groups, a curing catalyst for the siloxanes and from 0.1 to 2.0 per cent by weight of the emulsion of a carboxylic acid. Catalysts specified are lead, zinc and ferric octoates, dibutyl in diacetate and dilaurate and ferric and cobalt naphthenates. As stabilizers, carboxylic acids specified are acetic, formic, propionic, octanoic and 2-ethylhexoic acids. The methylhydrogen siloxanes used include those of the unit formula CH3,H,SiO and copolymers thereof with (CH3)3SiO0,5, and the other siloxanes may be hydroxylated (CH3)2SiO, e.g. <FORM:0804198/IV (a)/2> or copolymers thereof with CH3,SiO 3/2 . When the viscosity of the siloxane mixture is 500,000 cps. at 25 DEG C. or above, it is preferable to use the siloxanes in the form of a solution, e.g. in toluene, perchlorethylene or heptane. Examples are given. Uses.-In treating paper such as glassine, parchment, kraft and tissue and making containers thereof or laminated containers therefrom to prevent adhesion of sticky materials thereto.
