Abstract

A composition for treating paper and paper products comprises a mixture of (1) an alkyl-hydrogen-polysiloxane (2) a diorganopolysiloxane containing terminal Si-bonded hydroxyl or alkoxy radicals, and (3) an aminosubstituted silane containing at least one Si-bonded alkoxy radical and at least one amino group bonded to Si through one or more C atoms, or a hydrolysate thereof. The preferred silanes (3) are methyl-g -aminopopyl-tri-isopropoxysilane, vinyl-g -aminopropyldibutoxysilane, g - aminopropyltriethoxysilane, d - aminobutyltriethoxysilane, N - b - aminoethyl - g - aminopropyltrimethoxysilane and N - b - aminoethyl - d - aminobutyltriethoxysilane. Preferably the siloxanes are used in amount, by wt., of from 0.1 to 10% of (1) to 99.9 to 90% of (2) and the silane is used in amount of 0.5 to 5.0% of the siloxane mixture. Catalysts, e.g. stannous-octoate and -acetate, zinc octoate, dibutyltin-dioctoate -dilaurate and -diacetate, and cobalt naphthenate, and solvents may also be added. Preferably the composition is stored prior to use in at least 2 packeges, one containing the siloxane mixture and optionally the solvent, and the other containing the silane and optionally the catalyst.ALSO:Paper and paper products are coated by applying thereto, e.g as by roller coating, Meyer rod or knife coating, a composition comprising (1) an alkylhydrogenpolysiloxane, (2) a diorganopolysiloxane containing Si-bonded hydroxyl or alkoxy radicals, and (3) a silane containing at least one Si-bonded alkoxy radical and at least one amino group bonded to Si through at least one C atom. or a hydrolipate thereof (see Division C3) and curing the applied siloxane. The composition is usually used as a solution in an organic solvent, e.g. xylene, and may also contain curing catalysts. Examples describe the above method of coating (1, 2) glassine, and (3, 5, 6, 8, 9) vegetable parchment, Kraft, tissue and cardboard are also mentioned. Uses: the products find use in the fabrication of interleaving papers, backing papers, and sacks for holding sticky materials.
