Class 20(1) [Also in Group XXIX] A method of erecting the cylindrical shell of a vertical storage container from plates assembled in end-to-end arrangement consists in disposing the plates in a continuous helical formation and securing the plates together end-to-end and also to the plates of the last preceding helix, while progressively elevating the erected part of the structure by rotating said part on a helical foundation to form successive spaces for receiving following plates. A lowermost series of plates 1 of progressively increasing height form a cylindrical section, the upper edge of which conforms to a complete helix. A plurality of rollers 2 are fitted to the upper helical edge of the plates 1. An uppermost section of the shell is formed by plates 6, also of progressively increasing height. A protective detachable strip 7 of inverted U-shaped cross-section is attached to the lower edge of the top section by bolts. The two sections are separated to provide a helical gap between their adjacent edges. The upper section is then rotated on the lower section to form a space for receiving a plate 8 of constant height. This plate is secured to the immediately superposed plates of the upper section and the rotating and plate-securing operations are continued until the shell is of the required height. Finally, the upper edge of the bottom section is secured to the immediately superposed plates.
