Abstract
Titanium or zirconium subchlorides are prepared by reacting the tetrachloride with from one to three equivalents of sodium, in a dry finely-divided sodium chloride reaction medium, the temperature being maintained between the melting-point of sodium and that of sodium chloride. The di- or tri-chlorides may be so formed. They may be used in admixture with sodium chloride as reducing agents or separated by dissolving the reaction product 20% hydrochloride acid, filtering the undissolved sodium chloride and evaporating the lower halide solution in vacuum. A part of the subhalide product appears to exist as a complex or double salt with the sodium chloride. According to an example, sodium is dispersed over finely-divided sodium chloride in a stirred reactor under an argon or helium atmosphere, and the titanium tetrachloride is slowly added. The reactants are maintained at 290-330 DEG C. A mixture of titanium dichloride and salt results. Further examples refer to titanium trichloride production.
