Abstract
833,279. Centrifugal strainer separators. BRUNIG, M. Jan. 3, 1958 [Jan. 21, 1957], No. 296/58. Class 46. [Also in Groups II, XIII and XXXIV] A centrifuge such as a cream separator, a hydro-extractor, or a strainer separator has a hanging container supported by a bearing assembly which is permitted to move in one horizontal or substantially horizontal direction but whose movement normal to the direction is prevented. The shaft 2 of the container 1, Fig. 1, has a spherical head 4 supported by balls 5 resting on a bearing member or slide 11 which is movable relative to the frame 3 in the direction 6, Fig. 2, but not in the direction 7. The container is rotated by a belt 8 engaging the head and driven by a motor 9. A modified drive, Fig. 18 (not shown), comprises two friction wheels engaging the head and driven by motors mounted on the slide. In the construction shown in Fig. 21, the head 4 is the rotor of an electric motor, windings 30 being carried by the slide 11 and windings 31 being carried by the frame 3. The slideways may be curved and have limit springs which engage the ends of the slide. In further modifications the slide or bearing member is connected to or supported by springs extending axially from each end of the slide or member which is movable transversely. As shown in Fig. 8 the side supports 17 of the frame 3 deflect to permit movement of the bearing assembly, and in another modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the lower ends of the side supports are curved to permit the movement to be obtained by limited rocking of the centrifuge. Fig. 13 shows a construction in which the support 19 of the bearing member is pivoted at 20. In the construction shown in Fig. 16, the bearing member 21 rests on elastic tubular members 22 filled with fluid and having connections 23, 24 to the bearing member and the frame 3, the connections permitting limited movement of the bearing assembly in the direction 6. As shown in Fig. 17 the container 1 rests on the head 4 which is driven by the motor 9 and the slide supporting the head is prevented from moving in the direction 7.
