Abstract
Halogen-containing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized by bringing them into contact under polymerizing conditions with the product obtained by treating (a) a zinc or cadmium alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl zinc or cadmium halide, e.g. a half chloride, with (b) a compound of a metal occupying any of the 4th to 6th places after the inert gases in one of the long periods of the Bohr-Thomsen periodic table of elements. The monomer may be vinyl chloride, (a) may be zinc or cadmium diethyl and (c) may be a titanium or vanadium compound, e.g. titanium tetrachloride or tertiarybutyl titanate. The reaction may be effected in inert solvents or diluents, e.g. hydrocarbons and petrol-ether, optionally together with diethyl ether, or excess of the monomer. The catalyst may be decomposed by treating with water, steam or an alcohol, e.g. methanol and butanol, and the product washed with methanol, acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, or alkali.
