832,091. Photographic materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 22, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 4900/57. Addition to 793,554. Class 98(2) In the process of the parent Specification wherein a photographic layer is formed by coating on a substratum or support a solution containing 10 to 40% by weight of gelatin, the solvent being an aqueous mixture containing at least 20% by weight of a volatile water-miscible organic solvent and drying, part of the gelatin is replaced by a film-forming polymeric substance. The film-forming polymers may be a graft copolymers such as those described in Specification 793,549, polyacrylamides or acrylate polymers such as polyalkyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymers alone or with butyl methacrylate, #-ethoxyethanol methacrylate, nonyl methacrylate or styrene, styrene/ #-ethoxyethanol methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymers, acrylic acid/acrylonitrile copolymers, polyamides, polythioamides, polyesters such as ethylene adipate/ethylene terephthalate copolymers, polyester-amides, condensation products of formaldehyde and urea, melamine or phenol, and cellulose derivatives. A cross-linking agent may be added to the emulsion such as certain specified epoxides, organic dioxides, glycidyl ethers, esters, amines or amides, formaldehyde, glyoxal or mucichloric or mucobromic acids.
