718,404. Photographic light sensitive compositions; colour photography. DAWSON, F., ILLSLEY, C. R., MOILLIET. J. L., ZEIGLER, H. W. G., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 22, 1953 [June 16, 1952], No. 15078/52. Class 98(2) The composition comprises an emulsion containing, as the dispersed phase a light-sensitive aqueous gelatino-silver halide emulsion, and as the continuous phase a solution of a waterinsoluble water permeable cellulose ether in an incompletely water-miscible solvent. The composition may be made by adding a normal black and white type emulsion, or a colour type emulsion with colour formers. to a solution as of ethyl cellulose in a solvent such as xylene, tetrahydronaphthalene, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, monochlorobenzene or ethylene dichloride and stirring, followed if desired by homogenizing. The composition has properties similar to spirit printing inks and may be coated onto a substrate such as film or paper by high speed coating methods and dried rapidly to produce photographic layers. Preferably part of the water of the emulsion is removed as by heating, with replacement of any solvent also removed, before coating. Exposure and development of the layers are effected by normal methods, but if desired the processing solutions may contain water-soluble solvents such as methanol, ethanol, butanol, acetone or #-ethoxyethanol to assist penetration of the solutions into the layers. Multilayer and mixed grain colour materials of conventional type as regards design of silver halide sensitivities and colour former sequences are described. Examples detail: (1) and (4) a red sensitized-colour former composition and coating thereof onto a paper base carried on a rubber conveyer belt under a doctor knife or coating by the offset printing process, with drying, exposure and processing to cyan; (2) a green sensitized colour former composition with coating exposure and processing to magenta; (3) black and white procedure; (5) preparation of separate blue sensitive-yellow colour former, red sensitized-cyan colour former and green sensitizedmagenta colour former compositions, mixing thereof, coating onto a paper base, drying, exposure to light transmitted by a colour negative, colour developing, fixing, bleaching and fixing again in solutions always containing 10 per cent of #-ethoxyethanol, to produce a three colour image.
