786,274. Oil emulsions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. Oct. 14. 1955 [Oct. 29, 1954]. No. 31289/54. Addition to 718, 404 and modified by 750,201. Class 98(2) The water-in-oil type emulsions of Specifications 718, 404 and 750,201 in which a black and white or colour gelatin-substitute emulsion which may contain colour formers forms the dispersed phase in a continuous phase of a water-insoluble waterpermeable cellulose ether are varied bv replacement of the latter by another water-insoluble polymeric material capable of forming a layer which is permeable to photographic processing solutions. The description refers to production of emulsions for colour photography, more particularly for mixed grain layers; but nine specific examples are all concerned with gelatino-silver halide emulsions for black and white procedure, thus in Example 1 a chloride-iodide emulsion for printing paper is added to a chloroform solution of a diethylene glycol terephthalate polymer prepared by heating dimethyl terephthalate with diethylene glycol in presence of zinc acetate to effect ester interchange and polymerizing the product at reduced pressure, the emulsion polymer mixture is stirred and passed through a colloid mill, applied to the paper by a draw knife, imagewise exposed after drying, and developed in metol/hydroquinone and fixed. Example 2 is similar except that a chloroform/ butanol mixture is used as solvent for the polyester and a proportion of ethyl cellulose is included therewith. Examples 3, 4 describe the partial dehydration of a chloride emulsion by ethanol precipitation and addition of the product to a butonal/ chloroform solution of methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer. Examples 5-8 describe somewhat similarly addition of chloride emulsions to polyamide solutions, and Example 9 to a nonyl methacrylate/methacrylamide copolymer solution. Numerous other polymers for the purpose are listed, and a test to determine the water-permeability of the polymers is described.
