Abstract

831,980. Glass manufacture. OWENSILLINOIS GLASS CO. Sept. 10, 1956 [Sept. 20, 1955], No. 27556/56. Class 56. Projections are formed on a glass surface, particularly on the interior wall of a face plate for a cathode ray tube, by softening a localized area of the wall, establishing pressure contact between a portion of the softened area and a forming tool, and shaping the softened area. The depth of the softened glass is less than the thickness of the glass so that the exterior face of the wall is not distorted. The tool may be associated with vacuum means for drawing the surface of the glass into the recess. In Fig. 1, the cathode-ray tube face plate 15 rests upon locating buttons 18 and is positioned by two pairs of opposed fixed and movable rollers 24a, 24b, the rollers 24b being vertically movable by fluid-pressure means 25. The forming tools 19 are each moved towards the glass wall, by fluid-pressure means 16, through an annular burner 23 which is supplied with fuel at 23b and plays upon the glass wall to soften a limited area and depth thereof. Vacuum may be applied to the tools 19 through passages 19b, 17b a plug 19d, with very small axial grooves, permitting the vacuum to be applied to the tools but preventing glass from being drawn into the passage 19b. A motor-driven shaft 28 carries cams 30a, 30b, 30c, 30d which control vacuum supply valves 26a, 26b and fluidpressure supply valves 27a, 27b. The valves are operated in sequence so that the rollers 24b are forced up to grip the face plate in virtue of the slight taper of the flange 15a, and after a period sufficient for the burners 23 to soften the glass, the tools 19 are moved into contact with the glass and vacuum is applied to the cavities in the tools. Application of vacuum to the cylinders 16 and 25 permits the face plate to be removed. The shapes of the projections may be varied by altering the shapes of the recesses in the forming tools and the face plate may be thickened on the flange at the positions to be provided with projections so that any substantial reduction in wall thickness is avoided.
