Abstract

734,461. Glass manufacture. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., DAVIDSON, T. R. N., and SCRUTON, A. H. June 25, 1954 [June 26, 1953], No. 17824/53. Class 56. A part of the external surface of a glass tube is accurately shaped and dimensioned, as a surface of revolution, by rotating the tube about its axis, softening the glass over the part to be shaped, creating an excess pressure within the tube so as to force the softened glass outwardly into contact with a roller or rollers which impart the final shape to the glass. As shown in plan in Fig. 1, the glass tube 3 is closed by end bungs 1, 2, the latter having a connection 4 with an air pump. The tube is held in two opposed rotary chucks (not shown), one of which is displaceable along the axis of rotation for insertion and removal of the tubes. The glass is softened by a gas burner 5 with jets 6, and cylindrical iron rollers 7 are accurately positioned, by a right- and lefthanded screw adjustment 14, 15 on each side of the tube. The screw 14, 15 is mounted in a central stationary bearing on the base 11 and the blocks 10, which carry the rollers, slide on the base on which stops are adjustably secured to limit the inward movement of the rollers. The chilling effect of the rollers reduces the temperature of the glass to below its softening point, the gas flames then being lowered to reduce the strains in the glass. The air pressure is then released. A conical part of a glass tube may be accurately shaped by using cylindrical rollers with their axes inclined to the axis of rotation, or by using frusto-conical rollers. The neck portion of a cathode-ray tube may be accurately formed, either before or after it is secured to the bulb portion of the envelope.
