Abstract
738,203. Shaping glass articles. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., and SIMS, C. H. April 13, 1954 [April 13, 1953; Nov. 24, 1953], Nos. 10033/53 and 32613/53. Class 56. In the manufacture of a glass body comprising a relatively thick main wall portion and a relatively thin-walled neck portion extending from an aperture in the main wall portion, such as a television cathode-ray tube, the conical main portion 1 is pressed with a closed narrower end. The cone is now secured to a rotating table 2 and the closed narrow end is heated. An internal forming tool T, different examples of which are shown in the two Figures, is now advanced into engagement with the softened end to push it out into a tubular form, as shown in Fig. 3, the external surface being engaged by a shaping roller 12. In the form shown in Fig. 1 the whole of the inner forming member T rotates at the same speed as the table 2 but in Fig. 3 only that portion 5 which initially engages the softened glass is positively driven, the roller 8 freely rotating on a stationary shaft 6 eccentric of the rotating shaft 4.
