Abstract

831,813. Packaging seedlings. KOCH, H., and KOCH, T., [trading as HAKO, H. KOCH & SOHN.]. Feb. 8, 1957 [Feb. 9, 1956; July 28, 1956], No. 4478/57. Class 94(1). To facilitate planting, seedlings 4 are attached at intervals to a web 2, Fig. 2, as by adhesive 3, or secured between adhesive coated webs 2 and 5, Fig. 3, and then wound on to a reel. The webs and/or adhesive may incorporate plant foods and insecticides. One or both webs may be of fabric or decomposable material, such as paper. Apparatus for securing the seedlings between the webs comprises a rotating disc 16, Fig. 5, formed with inclined peripheral pockets 46 lined with sponge rubber 47. The seedlings are gripped by the pockets and presented in succession to the nip of resilient rollers 18, 19 over which the webs 2, 5 are fed from supply rolls 20, 21, each seedling being stripped from the disc by a resilient member 50. After leaving the rollers the webs and enclosed seedlings are twisted through 90 degrees by deflectors 58 and then wound on a drum 6. The speed of the disc may be adjusted to vary the spacing between the seedlings.
