Class 126 [Also in Group XXIX] In hinged, gas-heated hot-plate 3 or grill, means for cutting off the gas supply actuated by movement of the hot-plate 3 to a vertical position in a housing 5 comprise a body 7 secured to the housing 5 and a bracket 8 mounted on the hot-plate 3, the body 7 comprising parallel tubes 10, 11 joined by a crosspiece having a through bore 12. A tapered cock plug 9 held in a tapered portion of the tube 11 by a spring 14 bearing on a circlip 15 is drivably connected to the bracket 8 by means of a spindle 16 engaging in a journal 19 secured to the bracket. A tubular trunnion 24 in threaded engagement with the interior of the other end of the tube 11 receives a pipe 25 leading to the burners 26. The plug 9 has an axial bore 28 which registers with the trunnion 24 and a side port 29 which, when the hot-plate 3 is horizontal, registers with the bore 12 through which gas supplied to the tube 10 passes. When the hot-plate 3 is lifted, the plug 9 and trunnion 24 rotate and the gas supply is cut off. In an alternative embodiment (not shown), the bracket is secured to the housing and the body to the hot-plate 3, the bore 12 connecting with the burners and the pipe 25 with the gas supply, and the tube 11 rotating on the plug 9 to disconnect the bore 12 and port 20. According to the Provisional Specification, isolating means for an electrically heated apparatus comprises a lever-operated switch, the lever of which moves about an axis parallel to the hinge axis or coaxial therewith. An arm rigidly connected to the movable part of the apparatus is curved with a radius equal to the effective length of the lever to which it is connected by the engagement of a pin on the lever with a slot in the arm. The slot, through lost motion, permits snap action of the switch to the on or off position to which it is urged by the engagement of the pin with one end of the slot. Alternatively, the arm may be pivotally secured to the movable part either at a point eccentric to the hinge axis, or coaxially with the hinge, in which case studs may be formed on the movable part to engage the arm and urge it towards the on and off positions. A rotary switch may be similarly mounted and connected by axial coupling, allowing lost motion if required.
