(01. 158-10) The present invention'relates to new and-useful improvements in fire kindlers particularly for use in starting coal or coke fires in furnaces and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which the same may be expeditiously and conveniently projected into the ash pit beneath the furnace grate through the usual ash pit door and withdrawn therefrom.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a fire kindler of the character set forth embodying a novel construction of deflector for directing the flames upward through the furnace grate for contact with the coal, coke or other fuel.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a fire kindler of the character described which will be simple in construction, strong, durable,
efiicient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still'further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein: p Figure l is a view in front elevation showing a fire kindler constructed in accordance with' the present invention in operative position in a,

Figure 2 is a View in horizontal section through the lower portion of the furnace showing a kindler in accordance with this invention in position.
Figure 3 is a View in vertical section taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail view in perspective of the flame deflector.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral designates generally the lower portion of a conventional furnace having an ash pit 2 beneath the usual grate bars, said ash pit having an outlet opening 3 for which a hinged door 4 is provided in the usual manner.
The embodiment of the fire kindler constituting the present invention which is illustrated in the drawings comprises a supply pipe 5, which is connected with a suitable source of fuel supply, preferably gas (not shown). A depending short pipe section 6 is connected with one end of the supply pipe 5 by an elbow 7. Threadedly connected with the short pipe secti0n6 and depending therefrom is the fuel control valvewhich is designated generally by the referencenumeral 8. Said control valve comprising a casing 9 which is threaded on the pipe section 6. The control valve 8 further includes a manually rotatable plug 10 of conventional construction which, of course, is operable in the casing 9 and which is provided with an operating handle 11.
Formed integral with the casing 9 and depending therefrom is a tapered extension 12 having a circumferentially extending channel 13 therein. The passage through the casing 9 which is controlled by the plug or core 10 continues into the extension 12 and then extends laterally and merges with the channel 13. The passage is designated by the reference numeral 14.
A coupling 15 is mounted for rotation on the extension 12 and is provided with a tapered opening for the reception of the extension. A threaded shank 16 projects from the free end of the extension 12 and mounted thereon is a nut and washer 17 and 18, respectively, which retains the coupling 15 rotatably on the extension. The tapered opening in the coupling 15 which receives the extension 12 is provided with a channel 19 which is opposed to the channel 13. The bore 20which isprovided in the coupling 15 communicates with the channel 19 for receiving fuel from the valve 8.
An elbow 21 connects the burner pipe 22 with a short pipe section 23 which, in turn, is threaded into the coupling 15, as clearly seen in Figure 3 of the drawings, and in this manner the burner pipe is mounted for swinging movement in a horizontal plane into and out of the ash pit 2 of the furnace 1 through the opening 3 when the door 4 is swung to open position. Air is intro- 'duced to the fuel at 24 and is thoroughly mixed with said fuel while passing through the burner pipe 22.
Mounted on the free end portion of the burner pipe '22 and projecting beyond said burner pipe is an upturned deflector 25 which directs the flames upward through the grate of the furnace for contact with the fuel on said grate. Formed integrally with one end of the deflector 25 is a split clamping sleeve 26 engageable over the free end portion of the burner pipe for mounting the deflector in position thereon.
In use, when it is desired to start a fire, the furnace door 4 is opened and the burner constituting the present invention is lighted. The lighted burner is then swung into the ash pit 2 of the furnace through the opening 3 to the position illustrated to advantage in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings and the flames are directed upward by the deflector 25 to the fuel, as hereinbefore described. The mounting of the burner on the extension 12 of the valve 8 permit swinging movement of the burner in this manner. Through the medium of the valve 8 the supply of fuel may be controlled as desired. It will further be seen that the construction of the coupling 15 is such that the fuel will flow to the discharge end of the burner regardless of what position th burner pipe 22 may be in. l
It is believed that the many advantages of a fire kindler constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and
although the preferred embodiment of the 'in-' vention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: p V v Means for kindling a fire in a furnace having a door opening in its ash pit, comprising a gas supply pipe having a vertically arranged portion located exteriorly of the furnace and adjacent that end wall of the opening which is engaged by the free end of the door when the door is closed, a coupling rotatably arranged on said vertical portion and having its interior in communication with the interior of said vertical portion, a short length of pipe connected with the coupling, an elbow connected with the outer end of said length of pipe, an air mixing member connected with the elbow and having an opening therein, a longer length of pipe connected with the said member, said elbow supporting the long length of pipe at substantially right angles to the short length of pipe, and a deflector connected to the free end of the last-mentioned pipe and extending upwardly and outwardly from the lower part of the pipe for directing a flame upwardly against the fuel on the grate of the furnace when the parts are swung inwardly through the door opening.
