Abstract

831,523. Pipe &c. coverings. BRITISH REFRASIL CO. Ltd. March 8, 1957 [March 9, 1956], No. 7417/56. Class 99(2). A flexible insulating unit has fibrous silica 10 enclosed between two sheets 12, 14 of metal (such as dimpled or crimped stainless steel 0À003 to 0À010 inch thick) joined by a seam weld 28 at their edges, the sheet 14 being reinforced at at least two opposite edges by the spotwelding thereto, at 26 and possibly at 27, of angle strip 16, e.g. of stainless steel 0À010 to 0À018 inch thick. The remaining two edges may be similarly reinforced, in which case the sheet 14 becomes dish-shaped, or the edges may be reinforced by edge members 32, Fig. 3. The units may be curved to fit a jet engine exhaust. The seam-welded edges of the sheets are bent back along the angle member 16, as shown in Fig. 2. Where a third edge is to meet the edge of an adjacent unit to form a lap joint, there is a reinforcing edge member 32, Fig. 3, of general Z form and the end of an adjacent angle member 16 is stepped as indicated and eyelets 50 are formed in a strip 48 carried by a plate 46 welded along the edge of the outer sheet 14. A lacing wire is passed through the eyelets 50 and through corresponding eyelets on the adjacent unit. The Provisional Specification describes also the welded and bent-back edges of the sheet (as shown in Fig. 2) as being spot welded to the angle member 16.
