Abstract
831,130. Gas burners. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 20, 1956 [July 8, 1955], No. 19069/56. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for the production of gases containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen by partial combustion of a gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon with oxygen or oxygenenriched air comprises a burner assembly having inner and outer conduits through which the preheated reactants are conveyed, the inner conduit being removable and easily replaced, and an expansion joint connected to the inner and outer conduits and having a diaphragm construction to compensate for the differential expansion between the inner and outer conduits. In Fig. 1 the burner assembly is indicated generally at A, the burner tip at B, the expansion joint at C and a mounting flange at D, F being the inlet for oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and E the inlet for gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon, e.g. natural gas. As shown in Fig. 1 the burner tip B has an outer conduit 13 with an orifice 14 and a cooling jacket 16, and an inner conduit 10, with an orifice 11, through which the oxygen or oxygen-enriched air is supplied, the gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon being supplied through the annular passage between the two conduits. The two conduits are held spaced apart by pins 19 and a ring 30 provided adjacent the expansion joint C (Fig. 3), and are held against axial movement by complementary locking lugs 12, 17, 18 carried respectively by the inner and outer conduit which can, by rotation of the inner conduit, be rotated into and out of locking engagement. A cooling coil may replace the cooling jacket 16. As shown in Fig. 3, the expansion joint comprises a bellows 22 with tubular supports' 23 around the ends of which are secured locking flanges 24, 25, the flange 24 being secured by bolts 26 to a flange 20 mounted on the end of the outer conduit 13 and the flange 25 to a flange 21 mounted on the inner conduit 10 which passes through the tubular supports 23 and the bellows 22. A pin 28 passes through aligned holes in lugs 20a, 21a, 24a and 25a as shown an the flanges 24, 25 also each have three spaced lugs 24b, 25b loosely connected by bolts 29, the arrangement serving as a safety device should the bellows 22 give way. The reactants are preheated to a temperature of, e.g. 900 ‹F. and temperatures above 2000‹F. and as high as 3000‹F. obtain within the reaction zone. The size of the inner conduits may be varied so that the same burner assembly can be used for both liquid and gaseous fuels.
