Class 44 The invention according to Claim 1 of the parent Specification is modified in that means are provided for moving the locking lever to and retaining it in a position disengaged from the other of the two jaws when the jaws are in the closed position whereby the jaws are freed of restraint by the locking lever against opening. As shown, a lever 13 connected to an arm 5a of a jaw 5 has a ratchet part including an edge or flange 46 which co-operates with a resilient ratchet element or catch 47 secured to a casing 1. When the handle 48 is pressed down, the flange 46 is brought into engagement with the catch 47 and the lever is disengaged from the jaw 6, but due to the weight of the member to be locked (for example, a car hood) the jaws are not opened until an upward force is exerted on that member whereupon the jaws separate and rotation of the jaw 5 about its pivot 3 under the action of a spring 114 results in the flange 46 sliding along and within the catch 47 to disengage the lever 13 from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4.
