Abstract

<PICT:0830419/III/1> A continuous process for the production of hydroxylamine sulphate by hydrolysis of aqueous solutions of salts of hydroxylamine disulphonic acid in which the hydrolysis reaction is maintained, without the supply of any additional energy for heating and cooling, by transferring heat liberated in the hydrolysis reaction to the aqueous solution of salts of hydroxylamine disulphonic acid to be hydrolysed, by passing the hydrolysed solution leaving the hydrolysis vessel in heat exchange in an acid-proof heat-exchanger, with the aqueous hydroxylamine disulphonate solution entering. An aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxylamine disulphonate is pumped by 2 from acid-proof lined tank 1 through heat-exchanger 3 made of graphite impregnated and bonded with synthetic resin and steam heater 4 of the same material to acid-proof lined hydrolysation container 5. The hydrolysed solution flows back through exchanger 3 to acid-proof lined collecting tank 6. When the heat transfer in exchanger 3 is sufficient to maintain the hydrolysis, the heater 4 is by-passed by adjusting valve 8, 9. The container 5 should be large enough to give sufficient residence time for hydrolysis. The piping may be porcelain and polyvinyl chloride. Cooler 7 of the same material as exchanger 3 is provided to cooled solution withdrawn on shut-down.
