Abstract

830,072. Aircraft pressure cabins. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 20, 1956 [April 21, 1955], No. 11506/55. Class 4. An aircraft pressure cabin has transverse hoops resisting hoop stresses and sufficiently closely spaced to take so high a proportion of the hoop stress borne by the skin and hoops that at the designed operating pressure differential the hoop stress in the skin is below the critical value at which a crack in the skin will propagate catastrophically. Failure of the cabin arising from rapid spreading of a crack due to fatigue or accident is thus prevented. In Fig. 2, the Z-shaped hoops 2 are thickened at 5 and the skin is also reinforced by hoops 4. Similar hoops may be disposed on the external surface of the skin, adjacent and between the frames 2, which then need not be thickened. A further form of hoop is shown in Fig. 5, comprising bands 4c secured to flanges on U-shaped frames 2c. Stringers 6 are provided. Preferably half, or at least half, of the material available for the skin and hoops is used for the hoops, and the radial expansion of the skin between the hoops due to the pressure differential nowhere exceeds by more than 5% the radial expansion of the skin in contact with the hoops.
