Abstract
830,006. Controlling aircraft. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 7, 1957 [Nov. 7, 1956], No. 34009/56. Class 4. Means reducing the inertial coupling between an aircraft control surface and its supporting structure comprises a mass in driving connection with the surface and mounted for angular movement within the supporting structure for movement about an axis substantially parallel to the surface hinge axis, in the opposite sense to the control surface wherein the gear ratio of angular movement of the mass to that of the surface equals the ratio of their movements of inertia. As shown, a toothed sector 14 extends forwardly from an aileron 12 hinged to a wing 11 on an axis 13, and meshes with the toothed periphery of a body 15 rotatable on an axis 16 in the wing. The body 15 is preferably in the form of a wheel having most of its mass in the rim. The drive from the surface 12 to the body 15 has preferably a step-up gear ratio, e.g. three to one. The surface may be under, exactly, or over statically mass balanced. A number of rotatable bodies may be connected with the surface at successive spanwise stations and in the case where an aileron tapers towards its tip, the moments of inertia of and gear ratio associated with the successive bodies may decrease and increase respectively going outboard, and a static mass balancing device may be provided at each station.
