Abstract
<PICT:0829990/III/1> A high-pressure apparatus comprises a die tapered at one end to provide a flat end surface, a pressure transmitting portion which has a substantially cylindrical portion and which is in contact with the flat end surface of the die, an opposed pressure member which is provided with a recess in axial alignment with the pressure transmitting portion for securing an object to be subjected to high-pressure conditions and which has a tapered end portion extending axially outwardly from the recess to conform to the tapered portion of the die, and means for applying pressure to the die. As shown in Fig. 2 the upper die 19 has a conical portion which transmits pressure to a cylindrical portion 37. The lower die comprises a block 21 which supports an annular block 22 provided with a central aperture in which is arranged a reaction vessel comprising spaced conductive discs 28 with a hollow conductive cylinder 29 arranged between them. An insulating disc 31 is located between block 21 and its associated disc 28 and is surrounded by a conductive ring 33. The reaction vessel is surrounded by an insulating cylinder 34 provided with a peripheral recess into which is fitted an insulating sleeve surrounding the member 37. A laminated conical gasket assembly is arranged around the upper part of the cylinder 34 between the die 19 and block 22, and comprises a number of thermal and electrical insulating and pressure-resistant washers 39 with a metal washer 40 between adjacent washers 39. In operation an electrical connection is made to each of the dies so that a current can be passed through the reaction vessel to heat it to a temperature greater than 2000 DEG C. whilst the pressure is maintained higher than 50,000 atmospheres. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the reaction vessel comprises an insulating cylinder arranged between two conductive discs, and the insulating cylinder is surrounded by a heating coil in electrical connection with the two discs.
