[Also in Groups XXX and XXXVII] A filter press has a reversible carriage 15 upon which is mounted an electric motor for driving the carriage along a girder by means of a sprocket engaging a chain, cylindrical housings 29 containing spring-urged plungers being provided for engaging the press-trays and moving them along the girder. In position A the carriage is moving to the left, and the leading housing 29 is prevented from swivelling by a locking-lever. Its plunger will presently rise, however, and ride over the abutment 35 of the first tray 36a, so operating a rocking lever to trip a reversing switch 38. The carriage will now move to the right and the now-trailing plunger will take the tray 36a with it, as shown at B. The leading plunger will then strike the abutment 35 on a previously moved tray 36b, or an abutment at the end of the press, and the plunger will rise and again trip the reversing switch. The carriage returns to the left as shown at C, the tray 36a being left behind since the trailing housing 29 swivels idly as the plunger passes the abutment on the tray. The trays are moved in the opposite direction by changing- over the locking-lever to lock the other housing. In a modification two shafts running parallel with the girder are provided with screwthreads of opposite pitch and are driven by a separate electric motor at one end. A rocking- lever mounted on the carriage has half-nuts at each end which are adapted to engage the lefthand or right-hand screw-threads respectively. This rocking-lever is actuated by the spring- urged plungers, as before, Fig. 4 (not shown). The trays may be linked together in groups, only one of a group being provided with an abutment.
