Abstract

A foaming detergent composition comprises (a) 5-45 parts by weight of a mixture of (i) a sulphate or phosphate ester of a polyoxethylene derivative of an organic compound of at least 10 carbon atoms; and (ii) a non-ionic surface active N-polyoxyethylenated alkylated benzenesulphonamide in which the alkyl substituents contain at least 8 carbon atoms and which contains 20-55% of combined ethylene oxide, the mixture containing 0.1-1.0 part of (ii) to each part of (i); (b) 10-90 parts of an alkali metal salt of a phosphoric or boric acid; (c) 0-5 parts of a water-soluble derivative of a polyose; and (d) 0-50 parts of at least one other water-soluble inorganic salt. The sulphate esters of polyoxyethylene derivatives of organic compounds, which are preferred to the phosphate esters, have the general formula Re-(CH2CH2O)n3-SO3Mm wherein Re represents the residue of the organic compound containing at least 10 carbon atoms and a reactive hydrogen atom, such as residues derived from fatty alcohols, fats, waxes, phenols, thiols, amines or carboxylic and sulphonic acids and their amides, n3 represents the number of ethenoxy groups sufficient to constitute 20-90%, preferably 30-65%, of the compound, M is alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, alkanolamine, or amine (including pyridine), and m is 0.5 or 1, according to the valency of M. The preferred compound of this type is sodium nonylphenoxytetraethenoxy sulphate. The benzenesulphonamide derivatives may have the formula <FORM:0829701/III/1> wherein R is an alkyl group of at least 4 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkyl group, m is 0-3, the sum of the carbon atoms in R and (R1)m is 8-18, R2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, or -(CH2CH2O)yH, and the sum of x and y represents the number of ethenoxy groups sufficient to constitute 20-55% of the compound. Preferred compounds are the condensates of diamyl-, nonyl-, dodecyl- and N-methyl dodecyl-benzenesulphonamides. The alkali builders (b) may be alkali metal phosphate, polyphosphate, borate, or perborate, or mixtures thereof, a mixture of sodium pyrophosphate and tripolyphosphate in about equal amounts being preferred. The water-soluble polyose derivatives (c) include carboxymethyl cellulose, starch, lichenin, xylan, hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl starch, starch glycollic acid and cellulose ethanesulphonic acid in the form of their water-soluble alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, or amine salts. The inorganic salts (d) are suitably sodium or potassium carbonate, sesquicarbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate or silicate. The compositions are generally produced in a dry state and usually in particulate form, but may be made up as solutions containing such solvents as ethanol or isopropanol.
