Abstract
816,366. Detergent compositions. COLGATEPALMOLIVE CO. Nov. 28, 1957 [Dec. 10, 1956 (3)], No. 37144/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 91. [Also in Group VI] A composition in paste form for insertion in steel wool scouring pads comprises such detergents as the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts of various organic sulphuric reaction products, e.g. the sulphonates of alkylated benzene, toluene, cresol or naphthalene in which the alkyl group contains 10-18 carbon atoms, such as sodium pentadecyl benzene sulphonate and sodium and/or magnesium tetrapropylene benzene sulphonate; higher fatty alcohol sulphates such as potassium and/or sodium lauryl sulphate and the lithium salt of sulphated alcohols derived from coconut, oil by reduction; sulphated higher fatty acid monoglycerides such as the sodium salt of monosulphated coconut oil fatty acid monoglyceride; and the higher fatty acid N-substituted taurates such as sodium N-methyl N-oleoyl taurate ; the solid water-soluble ethylene oxide condensates of water-insoluble (molecular weight 900-2400) polypropylene glycols; and the higher fatty acid alkanolamides, such as lauric mono- and diethanolamide. The synthetic detergent normally constitutes about 5-60 per cent and preferably 20-40 per cent by weight of the composition. Liquid foaming detergents may also be used provided they are mixed with sufficient alkaline salt, starch or similar solid material to absorb the liquid and convert the detergent to a solid form. These detergents are plasticised with other liquid or pasty surfaceactive agents, such as the normally fluid alkylolamides of higher fatty acids containing 10-18 carbon atoms, for example, the diethanolamides of oleic or coconut oil fatty acids, the corresponding glycerol amides, ethylene oxide condensates of fatty acids or amides containing 10-18 carbon atoms and fatty acid in the fatty residue, condensates of alkyl phenols containing 6-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups, such as isooctyl and nonyl phenol, with 6-16 mols. of ethylene oxide, and condensates of waterinsoluble (molecular weight 900-3400) polypropylene glycols, such as polypropylene oxide in an amount equal to about 40 per cent by weight of the final polymer. The plasticiser is used in an amount sufficient to permit the formation of a uniform mixture of the buffer and synthetic detergent, and normally constitutes about 20-65 per cent and preferably 20-40 per cent by weight of the total composition. The alkaline salt should be present in an amount of about 10-65 per cent and preferably 20-45 per cent and inhibits rusting of the steel wool. Examples of suitable salts are pentasodium tripolyphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, trisodium phosphate, sodium carbonate, borax, and mixtures thereof. About 3-20 per cent and preferably 5-10 per cent by weight of a corrosion inhibitor such as sodium silicate may be incorporated in the paste, as well as a small quantity of soap. U.S.A. Specification 2,315,983 is referred to.
