Abstract

829,191. Oscillating electric motors. HELD, S. Aug. 21, 1956 [Aug. 23, 1955], No. 25581/56. Class 35. [ALso in Group XVIII] In an electric timepiece the going train is driven by a balance which is maintained in oscillation by the interaction between a magnetic field or fields and a current carrying coil or coils, the circuit of which is periodically closed as the balance swings. In principle the coil 1 may be wound into a figure-of-eight, Fig. 1, but in practice two coils of generally triangular shape are used, Fig. 3. The coils are carried by the balance staff and the magnetic fields are provided either by two opposed permanent magnets 3, Fig. 1, or by one permanent magnet and an opposed plate of soft iron. The number of magnetic fields may be increased by arranging additional permanent magnets 5, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Temperature compensation may be obtained by placing a bar of alloy at its Curie point on the magnet 3. The magnetic fields may be obtained by cylindrical magnets, Fig. 8, or by a magnet of washer form 5, Fig. 9, to which soft iron plates 13, 14 are fixed. The coil circuit contains a switch comprising a flexible contact and a contact carried by the balance. In another example, Fig. 11, a coil 26 oscillates with the balance staff to produce a retarding couple for regulating the amplitude of swing of the balance. The coil may be connected to the input of a semi-conductor amplifier, the output of which is connected to the coils. The coils 1 may be fixed and the magnet or magnets 3 movable, Figs. 14 and 16.
