Abstract
829,182. Pipe couplings. WILLS, H. A., and QUICK, W. H. Dec. 6, 1955 [Dec. 6, 1954], No. 35311/54. Class 99(1). Two or more pipes are joined together in a fluid-tight manner by a casing made up of two similar parts 3a, 3b, Fig. 3, which together provide a passage connecting openings 6 to receive the ends of pipes 1, 2, a sealing strip 11 surrounding the passage and each pipe end, being compressed when the casing parts are secured together, as by means of a bolt 13. Each casing part consists of a rectangular block provided with a recess 4 leaving a border 5 which is cut to form the openings and in which is a groove 7 to receive the strip 11. Walls 8 raised up from the base of the recess form stops for the ends of the pipes, shown as flared, and a boss 9 has a hole for the bolt 13, a sealing strip 12 being interposed between the two bosses. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the pipes 1, 2 are at right angles, and the casing part 3b has a flange whereby the coupling may be bolted to a support. In Figs. 6.and 7 .(not shown), a pipe is joined to each side of a rectangular and a triangular casing respectively, a bolt being provided at each corner, and in Fig. 8 (not shown), a pipe enters .each end of a rectangular casing, three pipes enter one side and a pipe enters the opposite side. Fig. 10, shows a circular casing for connecting four radial pipes, the border 5, wall 8 and recess 4 being annular. A base plate 17 with a fixing flange 19 may be secured to the casing by the clamping screw 13. Fig. 15 shows a modification of this form with provision for connecting axial pipes. The bosses 9 are reduced in height at 9a, and recesses 20 are provided to receive the flared ends of axial pipes, one only being shown and the hole in the other boss being blanked off by a rubber disc 21. The two parts of the casing are pressed together by clamping plates 22, 23, a conical sealing ring 26 being squeezed in the space between the casing part 3a, the axial pipe and a conical surface on the plate 23. In modifications, Figs. 16 ... 18 (not shown), the wall 8 is dispensed with, axial movement of the pipe inwardly being prevented by a bulge spaced from the flared end of the pipe by a distance equal to the width of the border 5, the sealing ring 12 is squeezed between shoulders on the bosses 9, one or more pipe openings are plugged by means of solid rods, and outward spreading of the sealing rings 11 is prevented by providing a step in the border 5 of the casing part 3a and a complementary rib on the part 3b, a similar arrangement being used for the sealing ring 12.
