Abstract

A molecular complex of one or both of sennosides A and B (the glycosidal principles of senna) and a carbohydrate polymer, for example, guar gum, alginic acid, polygalacturonic acid is made by reacting together in an aqueous, alcoholic, or hydroalcoholic medium, e.g. water, a lower alcohol (containing not more than 6 carbon atoms) or mixtures thereof, sennosides A and/or B or a solid or fluid extract of senna and a carbohydrate polymer capable of hydrogen bonding with the sennosides. The complex may be compounded in pharmaceutical dosage unit forms, e.g. tablets, capsules, suppositories, granules (for dispersion in aqueous fluids) which may contain 5 to 20 mg., preferably 10 mg. (tablets, suppositories or per teaspoon of granules) or 5 or 10 mg. (capsules) equivalents of the sennosides. Specification 683,990 is referred to.
