Abstract
Decorative effects are produced on textiles or films composed wholly or to a substantial extent of organic esters of cellulose, e.g. cellulose acetate or triacetate, by applying a swelling agent, then removing or substantially removing the swelling agent by washing with water, then locally applying pressure according to a desired pattern and finally applying a dye-stuff, a differential dyeing effect delineated by the pattern being thereby obtained. Specified swelling agents, which may be applied as heated aqueous solutions or emulsions, are diethylene glycol diacetate, glyceryl diacetate, ethyl lactate, sodium thiocyanate, o-phenyl phenol, tributyl phosphate, triethyl citrate and those listed in Specification 812,697. The material may be padded with or worked in the swelling agent and rinsing-off may be effected in hot water. Local pressure may be effected by a press, stamp, brush, rolling device or a heated engraved calendar. Alternatively, local pressure may be applied as described in Specification 752,191, whereby local areas are compressively shrunk thereby yielding, in addition, a seersucker effect. Dyeing may be effected on a winch or jigger or by padding, and continuous methods employing a molten-metal bath, as described in Specification 620,584, may be used. Suitable dyestuffs are disperse, vat, solubilized vat, acid, basic and azoic dyestuffs. An additional dyeing step may be effected before the local application of pressure, whereby two-colour effects are obtained. The steps of pressure and dye application may be repeated with different patterns and dyes to yield combination effects. Numerous examples are given. Specifications 301,567, 301,568 and 311,306 also are referred to.
