Abstract
Textiles and sheets or films made wholly or to a substantial extent of cellulose acetate (including the triacetate) are subjected to the local application of pressure to a desired pattern and then, without any saponification step, to the application of a dye, for example, as by padding, whereby a differential dyeing effect delineated by the pattern is obtained. A swelling agent, many of which are specified, may be applied after the localized pressure application and before or together with the dye, whereby a differential puckered effect is also obtained. Pressure may be applied by a press, stamp, brush or embossed calendar and the apparatus of Specification 752,191, whereby selected areas of the material are compressively shrunk, may be employed. When no swelling agent is employed, dispersed, solubilized acetate, azoic and vat dyes (including acid leuco vat dyes) may be applied, followed, if necessary, by a steaming operation, the pressed portions of the material resisting the dyestuff. When a swelling agent is applied with the dye, acid, premetallized and vat dyes may be employed, a subsequent washing removing the dye from the unpressed parts of the material. When a swelling agent is applied before the dye, acid, premetallized and basic dyes may be employed, a subsequent drying step effecting migration of the dye to the pressed portions of the material. Two-coloured effects may be obtained by double-dyeing from the same or different baths employing dyes responding differently to the material, or by additionally dyeing the material, e.g. with a disperse dye, before the application of pressure. The steps of applying pressure and dye may be repeated to give combination effects. Numerous examples are given. Specifications 301,567, 301,568 and 311,306, [all in Class 15 (ii)], also are referred to.
