Abstract

828,886. Drying systems. ASSOCIATED PORTLAND CEMENT MANUFACTURERS Ltd. June 21, 1956 [Aug. 29, 1955], No. 24764/55. Class 34(2) [Also in Group XII] Drying apparatus, for use m combination with a kiln in the manufacture of, e.g., cement, clinker, comprises an annular chamber C the rotatable lower portion 1 of which is mounted on rollers 5 and is joined by a gastight seal 22 to the stationary upper portion 2 which has a gas outlet duct D. Raw material in the form of spherical nodules is fed from a hopper H on to the base 23 of the chamber and builds up to form an annular mass supported between the outer walls of the chamber and a refractory dome 17, which is supported by brackets 17<SP>1</SP>. Hot gases from the kiln K pass through inlet 7 and upwardly through the material and are exhausted by fan N. The dried material is discharged from the chamber by reciprocating rams 8 operated by a cam mechanism 9. The mechanism comprises a cam track in the form of a channel 10 in which run rollers 11 journalled to a bell-crank lever 31, the bifurcated arm 35 of which has secured to it a toothed sector plate 36 which meshes with racks 37 secured to the rams 8, the racks being kept in driving engagement with the sectors by rollers 41. The cam track 10 is such that the rollers move with an up and down movement which causes the rams to reciprocate radially. Alternatively, the cam track takes the form of a ring arranged eccentrically with respect to the chamber.
