Abstract
A polyamide composition comprises at least one polyamide made from ingredients containing an excess of acid component over the amine component and at least one polyamide made from ingredients containing an excess of the amine component over the acid component. With o -aminocarboxylic acid polyamides, one of the polymers is made with the addition of an appropriate amount of a dicarboxylic acid prior to polymerization and the other with addition of an appropriate amount of a diamine. Branching agents, e.g. trimesic acid, may be used in the preparation of the polyamides. In the examples: (1) a polyamide made from excess sebacic acid and hexamethylene diamine is blended in chip form with a similar polyamide made using excess of the diamine, the resultant mixture being melted and spun into yarn; (2) polyamides made from excess adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine are blended in chip form with similar polyamides made from excess of the diamine, the mixtures being melted and spun into yarn; (3) a polyamide made from caprolactam and adipic acid is blended with a polyamide made from caprolactam and hexamethylene diamine, the molten blend being heated and quenched; (4) a polyamide made from excess sebacic acid and hexamethylene diamine is blended in chip form with a similar polyamide made from excess diamine, the product being dried and injection moulded.
