Abstract

A method of increasing the resilience of an expanded synthetic resin material, e.g. polyurethane, having interconnected pores and in the form of chippings or particles, comprises temporarily heating the material. In one embodiment a vented mould with perforated heating tubes 6 is lined with sheets 10, 11, and filled with shavings and granules of the material. The mould is then closed and steam passed through the tubes 6, through the material and <PICT:0828154/IV (a)/1> the vents in the mould, causing the material to expand and when its temperature is above the melting-point of the material the shavings and granules to adhere to each other and to the linings 10, 11, whereupon the temperature is lowered causing the material to set in the form of a resilient cushion or mattress. To produce an article having layers of a different resilience the filling may be sprayed with a liquid polyethylene or be filled with layers of different synthetic resin materials.
