Abstract

Production of a porous body by filling a die with small graded pieces or particles of a thermoplastic material, closing the die, and heating the closed die to a temperature sufficient to cause the pieces or particles to sinter together the distribution of heat being controlled so as to intensify the degree of softening of the particles in predetermined regions of the body to effect local strengthening of the body in those regions preferably so that the body is sealed locally against the passage of liquid or gas by intensifying the degree of softening in the regions to be sealed sufficiently to destroy the porosity of the body in those regions. The preferred thermoplastic material, polystyrene, can be used in the form of rods, spherical beads or crushed particles for which limits defining useful sizes are given. Specified regions of the products, e.g. tiles or conical tubes, may be rendered completely non-porous. The distribution of heat in a selected region may be controlled by decreasing the thickness of the die wall in that region, by a local increase in the output of the heating medium or by use of a longer period of heating time.
