536,252. Moulding plastic containers. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Sept. 7, 1939, No. 25366. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 87 (ii)] A method of forming plastic containers comprises moulding from a non-brittle thermoplastic organic material a pre-form, in the form of an open-mouthed vessel with walls of varying thickness, placing such vessel in a die, heating such die to a temperature above that of the vessel and thereby raising the temperature of the vessel sufficiently to permit substantial expansion of a thicker portion or portions of the side walls while holding a thinner portion of the side walls against such expansion, and applying fluid pressure to cause such vessel to expand against the walls of the die. Specified materials are cellulose esters, e.g. cellulose acetate, and vinyl resins such as those made from vinyl acetals, styrenes or acrylates. The fluid pressure is preferably. applied progressively, to permit the material of the container walls to flow, during expansion.
