828,068. Packaging. HUGIN KASSAREGISTER A. B. Feb. 5, 1958 [Feb. 28, 1957], No. 3738/58. Class 94(1). A machine for forming packages by transversely folding a web and filling and sealing the pocket so formed, as described in Specifications 769,975 and 789,652 has a housing for enclosing the filled pocket prior to sealing, so that air may be exhausted and replaced, if desired, by preservative gas. The housing consists of fixed and pivoted portions 11, 12, the latter being normally spaced from the former to enable the folded web to depend between them. When the pociet has been filled, and the web released and severed, plates 19, 20, also normally spaced from each other, pivot inwards to the position shown to grip the sides of the pocket. These plates are mounted on a member 25 attached to a vertically moveable rod 27 and downward movement of the rod and plates draws the pocket fully into the housing, which then closes. If, as in Specification 769,975, the sides of the pocket must be closed before filling, grippers (not shown) clamp the pocket sides and also draw it into the casing. Fixed and moving heat sealing jaws 58, 59. 60, 63 are arranged inside the casing. In order to ensure good corner seams the pocket may be lowered by the plates 19, 20 in two stages, sealing of the top seam occurring at the first stage, and formation of side seams which overlap the top seam at the second. The housing is then opened to atmosphere by retraction of a plate 73, the portion 12 pivots back, a door 88 in it opens, and the package, released by the jaws and plates, is discharged down a shoot 85.
