Abstract
827,908. Ships'stabilizing fins. MUIRHEAD & CO. Ltd. Sept. 2, 1958 [Sept. 4, 1957], No. 27891/57. Class 113. A ship stabilizer comprises a main fin rotatable in an oscillatory manner and separate auxiliary fins, one on each side of the neutral position of the main fin, rotatable in time with the main fin to increase the lift thereof in each of the two directions of deflection of the main fin from the neutral position. In Fig. 2, the main fin 1 is associated with two auxiliary fins 2 so that when the main fin is deflected to its maximum angle (shown in phantom), it lines up with one of the auxiliary deflected fins 2. In Fig. 3, there are five auxiliary fins arranged symmetrically about the neutral position of the main fin. The assembly is shown with the main fin at maximum angle of tilt 20 degrees, the uppermost auxiliary being tilted to its maximum 50 degrees, the other auxiliaries assuming proportionately less angular defection down to the last one, which is deflected 20 degrees to the neutral. The proportion between the angles is maintained as the fins are turned together.
