Abstract

827,781. Universal joints. WOOD'S SONS CO., T. B. May 24, 1957, No. 16568/57. Class 80 (2). A flexible shaft coupling comprises a moulded rubber sleeve 29 having internal teeth 32 maintained in engagement with complementary teeth 27 on shaft hubs 5 by the following alternative means. As shown, overlying flanges 20 maintain engagement and such flanges may (Figs. 12 and 13, not shown) be internally toothed to engage external teeth on the rubber sleeve. The flanges may (Fig. 8, not shown) have longitudinally extending fingers between which are abutment lugs formed on the outside of the rubber sleeve to decrease relative turning movement between the shafts under load. In Figs. 14 to 20 (not shown) flat or circular section metal bands are sprung into grooves in the ends of the rubber sleeve or secured by adhesive thereto, axial displacement of the sleeve being prevented by snap-rings on the hubs or by radial flanges on the bonds. The teeth 32 may have an included angle of 60 to 90 degrees and the teeth on the rubber sleeve may be shorter than those on the hub. To facilitate assembly the rubber sleeve may have a straight or toothed longitudinal split 34 with or without dowels. In Figs. 21 to 23 (not shown) the rubber sleeve has a deep central groove internal or external and external or internal grooves on each side, producing a corrugated cross-section.
