In a control apparatus for a lift system having one or more cars serving a plurality of landings, the system is transferred to any one of a plurality of modes of operation by means responsive to the ratio of stops made in one direction of travel to the total number of stops made. The modes of operation described meet the traffic demand during " off hour," " up peak," " off peak " and " down peak " periods. In a device for measuring the demand on the system (Fig. 4, not shown) the resistances of two arms of a bridge circuit are varied by rotary switches which are stepped respectively by each car stop and by each car stop in one direction, the arrangement being such that when a predetermined unbalance occurs, a relay is operated to change the mode of operation. The system described includes means for reversing the car if it is loaded and has no further car calls in its direction of travel; means for assigning one car only to answer up calls during down peak periods; means which, during peak periods, cancels landing calls for service in one direction when a car set for travel in the other direction stops at that landing, but which permits immediate re-registration of the call, even while the car is stopped at that landing; and means for varying the non-interference time in accordance with predetermined conditions.
