Abstract

826,632. Indexing; moulding-machines. BIRMIDAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. July 13, 1956 [July 13, 1955], No. 20237/55. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (3). Indexing mechanism for multi-station machines, particularly adapted to a foundry coremaking machine, comprises a power-operated oscillating driving element which is connected and disconnected with a rotary driven member by relative axial movement, the rotary driven member thus receiving intermittent part rotation in one direction only. The part to be indexed is secured to shaft 24, which is raised by an air cylinder or other means, and has secured thereto a star wheel 22 with four radial slots 21. A pin 20 on the end of an arm 18 normally engages one of the slots, and on rotation of the arm in one direction, indexes the star wheel through a quarter turn from position 2211 to 22<SP>1</SP> (broken lines). The shaft 24 and star wheel are then lifted to release the pin 21 from the slot and engage the slot with a fixed pin attached to a bracket 26, which thus holds the star wheel in the indexed position. The pin 18 and its arm then return to the initial position in line with the next slot in the star wheel. The latter is subsequently lowered to engage pin 18, and receives a further indexing movement when the arm moves. A double-acting air cylinder 6 is arranged at the side of the arm 18, the latter being secured to a sprocket quadrant 16 engaged by a chain 13 stretched along the side of a beam 12 secured to the piston rods in the air cylinder. The chain thus acts similarly to a rack and is held against the sprocket quadrant by a roller 15. The indexing mechanism may be employed in a core-making machine described in Specification 826,633.
