Abstract

826,571. Hydraulic accumulators; pressurerelieving devices for fluids. MERCIER, J. March 2, 1956 [March 2, 1955], No. 6670/56. Classes 69 (2) and 135. An hydraulic accumulator comprises an outer casing 11, a deformable resilient partition 15, and a perforated core member 14, the core enclosing a cavity the volume of which is less than the volume of a body of revolution having the same external dimensions as the core. The core, in cross-section, may be shaped as shown in Figs. 2 or 4. Alternatively, the core may be elliptical and comprise a close coiled spring. To prevent the partition 15 distending through the perforations of the core member when a pressure difference exists in the accumulator, inlet and outlet connections at the top and bottom of the accumulator may be joined by piping containing one-way valves so that excess liquid can pass to the air containing portion and excess air can pass to the liquid-containing portion. The accumulator may be designed to take up surges in a pipe and for this purpose is of tubular form. In a further embodiment, Fig. 10, the accumulator 101 comprises a perforated core 111, a partition 115, and a rigid perforated sleeve 116, these members being mounted in end plugs 104, 108. Air is supplied through a pipe 103 and a pump 148 supplies liquid from a tank 149 to a member 121 connected to the bottom of the accumulator. Oneway valves 154, 155 are provided to allow the liquid or the gas to pass from one side to the other of the partition to relieve excess pressure and prevent distension of the partition 115. A valve 131 is provided in the member 121 and is acted on by a spring 135 and by the pump pressure via a pipe 142. When a valve 138 is opened, liquid is drawn from the accumulator until a predetermined pressure is reached when the spring 135 closes the valve. In a modification, the left-hand end of the valve 131 is connected by a pipe to the air supply pipe 103 and a second spring is provided in the right-hand end of the valve.
