Abstract

Metals, particularly iron and steel, are coated with a vegetable tannin extract, and either simultaneously or subsequently with a latex paint. Suitable tannins are Myrabolams and Valonia extracts; the latex paint may be an aqueous emulsion of a thermoplastic resin such as polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, natural or synthetic rubber, chlorinated rubber, mineral, animal or vegetable oils such as linseed oil or sulphonated castor oil, and may contain pigments and plasticizers. The surface to be coated need not be rust free but should be freed from loose rust. Specifications 484,990 and 826,566 are referred to.ALSO:Aqueous emulsions of polystyrene or polyvinyl acetate containing vegetable tannin extracts and with a pH of below 7 are used to form anticorrosive coatings for ferrous or non-ferrous metals.
