Abstract
826,011. Laminates. LEWIS, J., and RUBBER IMPROVEMENT Ltd. Jan. 11, 1957 [Jan. 19, 1956], No. 1866/56. Class 140. In multiply vinyl conveyer, elevator or transmission belting the warp threads of the textile plies consist at least partly of polyetheylene terephthalate continuous filament yarn and the weft threads at least partly of natural staple fibres such as cotton, flax, or, preferably, jute. For example, both warp and weft may comprise polyethylene terephthalate and natural staple fibre in threads of not less than 1000 denier, the warp threads containing 1 to 3 parts of polyethylene terephthalate to 1 of staple fibre. Alternatively the warp may comprise polyethylene terephthalate only, and the weft natural staple fibre only. A weave such as broken twill may be used which exposes a surface of the natural staple fibre for absorption of the vinyl coating. In an example, a composite duck comprising warp threads of polyethylene terephthalate continuous filaments, 3000 denier, 22 ends per inch, and weft threads of jute, 14 picks per inch and 24 1b. breaking strain, is coated and heat fused with a composition comprising polyvinyl chloride 100 parts, tritolyl phosphate 80 parts, and calcium stearate 2 parts; several such layers, together with outer layers of unreinforced polymer are then combined by heat and pressure. Edge coverings, preferably of extruded polyvinyl chloride strip, may be applied separately or during the lamination operation. Heat may be applied to the plies separately or to the completed assembly, a minimum temperature of 150‹ C. throughout the mass at a minimum pressure of 10 1b. per square inch being normally required. The belt may include anti-static layers.
