825,144. Cutting by spark discharge. VYZKUMNY USTAV PRE MECHANIZACIU A AUTOMATIZACIU. Sept. 5, 1956 [Sept. 15, 1955], No. 27161/56. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXXV] An electro-erosion apparatus comprises a cutting electrode I which is pressed towards the workpiece O to be cut by a force produced by an electromagnetic system B, T connected in parallel with the arc gap A. Current is supplied to the electrode and workpiece through a variable resistance R from a direct-current generator G having a sloping characteristic. The electromagnet comprises a fixed coil B, Fig. 2, and a moving coil T connected to the tool holder V; alternatively the moving coil may be connected to the workpiece. Both coils are connected in parallel with the spark gap, Fig. 1, the coil T being in series with a variable resistance P. When the current is switched on, the electromagnet pushes the saw electrode into contact with the workpiece but immediately the arc A is established, the voltage of the generator G drops thereby reducing the current passing through the coils B, T and reducing the force on the electrode to that required for correct operation. A spring Z biases the electrode away from the workpiece and if a short circuit occurs across the arc, the generator voltage drops which reduces the force on the electromagnets whereby the spring Z pulls the electrode away from the workpiece. The electrode may comprise a rotating disc or an endless moving band or wire. Instead of the spring Z, gravity or a pressure medium may be used.
