Abstract

[Also in Group XL(b)] In a gas discharge switch arrangement including a discharge tube having a gas-filled envelope in which are disposed a capacitive element and a keepalive electrode, the tube being detachably mounted in a waveguide in association with an inductive element, the capacitative element is formed by an electrically conductive member which projects from one broad side of the waveguide across substantially the whole of the smaller dimension of the cross-section of the waveguide, the other broadside of the waveguide has formed in it an aperture adjacent the free end of said member, and the keep-alive electrode is disposed entirely outside the interior of the waveguide with a portion of the electrode adjacent said aperture. The discharge tube shown comprises a glass cylinder 1 sealed to two metal bushes 2 and 14. A nickel cup 6 having an aperture 7 is secured in an axial bore 5 of the bush 2 by a metal sleeve 8, and a rod 9 forming a keepalive electrode is provided with a glass coating 11 and is sealed through a glass member 10 sealed to one end of the sleeve 8. The rod 9 is connected to a metal cap 13 partially embedded in a casing 12 of insulating material. A screwthreaded gunmetal rod 18 having a smooth conically tipped portion 20 forming the capacitative element is screwed into a bore 17 of the bush 14 and clamped in position by a lock-nut 22. During manufacture the discharge tube is evacuated and filled with argon through a pumping stem 25 which is then sealed off. A slot 21 in the rod 18 provides communication with the cylinder 1. The discharge tube is inserted in a rectangular waveguide (see Group XL(b)) so that the inner faces of the bushes 2 and 14 are co-planar with the inner surfaces of the broad walls of the waveguide. The inductive element is formed by two metal vanes projecting from the narrow walls of the waveguide. Specification 716,372 is referred to.
