Abstract

824,720. Variable pitch propellers. LIPS N. V. Nov. 5, 1957 [Nov. 7, 1956; April 8, 1957], No. 34540/57. Class 114. In a mechanism for adjusting the pitch of the blades of a marine propeller comprising a non-rotating servo-motor device fitted externally of the propeller shaft 1 and acting on a ring 9 which is axially movable along the shaft but does not rotate with the shaft said ring transmitting its axial movements to a structure 5, 3, 2 rotating with the shaft and including an adjusting rod 2 passing through the hollow propeller shaft 1, the servo-motor device also being connected to a non-rotating axially immovable ring 11 surrounding the shaft 1, the servo-motor device comprises two or more servomotor units 20 fitted around the shaft. The units 20 comprise a hydraulic cylinder and piston pivotally connected at 21 and 22 with the rings 11 and 9 respectively. The ring 11 is locked against rotation by a connection 16 to the ship structure and is mounted on a bearing 12 on a sleeve 13 firmly connected to the propeller shaft 1. The ring 9 is mounted on a bearing 8 on a sleeve 7 attached to rods 5 on a yoke 3 of the adjusting rod 2, the rods 5 extending through a casing- like part 4 of the shaft 1. The sleeve 7 rotates with, and is slidable along the shaft 1 ; the ring 9 being prevented from rotating by a guide member 17 screwed to the ring 11. The adjusting mechanism is operated by a switch 23 which feeds electric current to operate a valve 25 so that oil from a pump 26 and accumulator tank 29 is supplied to tubes 30 connected to the servomotor units. The angle of adjustment is indicated at 31. The adjusting rod 2 may be locked in axial position by bolts 33 which are screwed into the port 4 of the shaft to engage the yoke 3. As shown, the servo-motor units are to one side of the yoke 3 ; in another embodiment space occupied by the mechanism is reduced by arranging the units to straddle the yoke.
