824,670. Air-speed indicators. VYZKUMNY A ZKUSEBNI LETECKY USTAV. July 12, 1956, No. 21588/56. Class 69 (1). An aircraft air-speed indicator includes transmission mechanism for converting indicated air speed derived from a pitot tube to true air speed, by effectively multiplying it by the air density as obtained from measurements of air pressure and temperature. As shown, the differential pressure from the pitot tube acts on a pressure-sensitive bellows 1 coupled via a shaft 3 and toothed segment 17 and pinion 18 to a pointer 15 showing " indicated air speed." Shaft 3 is also coupled to a shaft 5, toothed sector 19, pinion 20 and pointer 16, via a link 4 pivoted to an arm 6 of fixed length on the shaft 3 and rotatable about this pivot against a spring 9 to vary the effective distance of pivot 9a (mounted on spring 9) from the axis of shaft 5, and hence the transmission ratio between shafts 3 and 5. The rotation of the link 4 is effected through members 8 and 7 by the action of an evacuated vessel 13 responsive to the air pressure and a capsule 14 connected to an air thermometer 14a constructed and coupled together so that the movement of link 11 is proportional to the change in logarithm of the air density; the result is stated to be that the effective arm at 9a is substantially proportional to air density within the desired density range so that pointer 16 indicates true air speed.
