Abstract

723,541. Indicating liquid levels. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 5, 1951 [Oct. 12, 1950], No. 23263/51. Class 123 (1). [Also in Group XIX] A liquid level indicator 25, Fig. 1, for use with a volatile liquid 13, comprises a flexible diaphragm 36, Fig. 2, subjected on its opposite faces to the pressures existing at the upper and lower extremities respectively of a liquid containing vessel 10, spring means 47 normally supporting the diaphragm 36 in a null position, spring means 86 for biasing the diaphragm in one direction only towards its null position, and means for converting deflections of the diaphragm into movement of an indicator arm 26 over a calibrated dial 27. Movement of the diaphragm 36, Fig. 3, is transmitted to. the indicator arm 26 through studs 50 and 56, moving a link. 60 connected to an arm 61 rotating a rocker shaft 63 having a thermo-responsive arm 69 secured thereto. A rod 79, on a rotatable shaft 77, is biased by a spring 78 against the thermo-responsive arm 69 to convert movement of the arm 69 into rotation of the shaft 77. A gear 81 on the shaft 77 drives a pinion 82 on the shaft of the pointer spindle 83. By suitably adjusting the above elements the indicator arm 26 may be caused to move through any desired angle over the dial 27 in response to the deflection of the diaphragm 36, or the arm may be adjusted to assume. a given position relative to the dial 27 with respect to a given deflection of the diaphragm 36. The thermoresponsive arm 69, which may be a bimetallic rod, ensures that temperature changes will not affect the accurate operation of the gauge. In order that the gauge 25 may be calibrated to indicate the level of the liquid in the flask, one end of the resilient lever 86 is secured to the gauge casing and the other end bears against a ball member 85 secured to the diaphragm 36. A plurality of screws 91, 92, 93, 94 are adjustable to contact the lever 86 to vary the effective length thereof as it is deflected by the diaphragm, the effective length of the lever 86 being thus varied as the diaphragm is deflected to control the response of the diaphragm to the pressure differential from the vessel 10. Specification 514,568, [Group XIX], is referred to.
